You need to have a cable to read the unlock code from the phone but you don't have to unlock it by cable. You can enter the harvested unlock code by hand. There is also the provision for a direct unlock but it is not a necessity.
Additionally you can reset the NCK to 00000000 if you want and then unlock it like it was any other Samsung phone.
